The Story Behind the Work

I grew up in small-town Iowa where work wasn’t theoretical — it was visible and mattered to people. My family drilled water wells for farms and businesses across the region. If the system didn’t work, people didn’t have water.

That lesson stayed with me: systems matter.

At 17, I joined the United States Navy and served on fast-attack submarines maintaining complex communications systems. It was there, at age 20, that I discovered Raphael Aguayo’s book Dr. Deming: The American Who Taught the Japanese About Quality.

That book changed how I see organizations.

It introduced me to a simple idea:

Performance problems are usually system problems.

Since then, my career has focused on helping organizations design systems that allow people to do their best work.

I began my professional career implementing ISO 9001 quality management systems and eventually led teams across:

• Quality engineering
• Lean and Six Sigma improvement
• Statistical process control
• Supplier quality management
• Internal and external auditing

Later, I moved into program management, helping organizations turn strategy into execution and guiding cross-functional teams delivering complex initiatives.

In one program, our team delivered $1.5M in additional annual revenue while reducing operating costs by $850K, improving both revenue and margin.

In a later role, I helped implement digital process automation that generated over $1M in annual operational savings.
